Systems Manager

Systems manager for the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), a joint NASA/Columbia University research institute in New York consisting of 500+ nodes. Responsible for hiring, coordinating and managing Systems staff to administer a heterogeneous network of IBM RS/6000 workstations, SGI IRIX workstations, PCs, Macs, printers, robotic tape libraries, and an Origin 3800 supercomputer, as well as all network hardware.

Directly involved, hands-on, in all aspects of administering the facility as a Senior Systems Administrator, including: investigating and making recommendations on hardware and software; preparing policy and procedure documents, corresponding implementation documents, and then implementing the policies and procedures; ensuring compliance with NASA and Federal policy concerning security, etc., and reporting on same; configuring and maintaining servers and services for GISS on a variety of hardware and software platforms; etc.

Administered a large heterogeneous network of IBM RS/6000 workstations, SGI IRIX workstations, PCs, Macs, and an IBM mainframe. Installed and configured new machines. Administered user accounts. Network administration. Firewall configuration. Programmed scripts and utilities in perl, csh, and C. Worked with AIX primarily, IRIX secondarily, and WindowsNT, MacOS and VM/CMS tertiarily.

Scientific Applications Programmer/ Software Engineer

Designed and implemented code to perform a variety of functions, specifically code to aid users on and off site to access large archives of atmospheric data. Used the code to maintain the archives of data. Documented the code and the data. Wrote small programs/utilities to aid users in the group at NCAR, provided general computing support to members of the group. Worked on several computer systems, including: Sun Workstations, CRAY-XMP and CRAY-YMP. Used several operating systems and programming languages, including: Unix, UNICOS, perl, FORTRAN, and C. Most of the work was done in an X-windows environment. Served as web and gopher administrator for the Climate Analysis Section. Wrote mail-server software in perl.

1987 to 1990 National Center for Atmospheric Research Boulder, CO. Student Assistant: Developed support software, both independently and with other team members, for various computer systems, including: CRAY-1, CRAY X-MP, IBM 4381, MassComp 6700, and IBM PC. Served a troubleshooting and maintenance role on several of the above mentioned systems, servicing both software that I had designed, and previously existing software. Operated with minimal supervision in all areas. Took many projects from conception to release with no outside support. Extensive user support interaction.

RELATED EXPERIENCE:

Four years as a free-lance theatrical technician. Duties included minor and major repairs on electrical equipment relating to lighting and sound, and the operation of lighting and sound equipment.

Data manipulation/database programming in BASIC, PASCAL, and FORTRAN.

Volunteer teaching in various subjects in small group settings for different organizations. Specifically, re-creation style fencing for the Society for Creative Anachronism (an Historical Recreation Organization) and Theatrical Performance, as well as cooking from historical sources.
